Role: Generative Motion Designer, Live Performer
Location: Épinal, France
For an art residency hosted by La Souris Verte, created generative motion design in TouchDesigner. Performed with a MIDI controller with pianist/vocalist Melissa Weikart. As part of the Fête des Images (Festival of Images), played four shows in two days.
The movement language was inspired by Melissa's aquatic songwriting themes, Impressionist piano, the nearby Vosges mountains, and two local cathedrals: Basilique Saint-Maurice (Neo-Gothic) and Notre-Dame-au-Cierge (modernist).
In 19th century France, the image d'Épinal was a type of brightly colored print with naïvely optimistc subject matter. In this tradition, every year, the town celebrates Fête des Images, when images are projected all over the city. The festival has grown to incorporate more types of art, now known as Les Nocturnes des Imaginales. As part of the residency, we also held a workshop for local schoolchildren, demonstrating the possibilities of audio-visual collaboration.
Each performance was 30 minutes long, in cold weather. Used TouchDesigner to map specific motion parameters to MIDI controller knobs and respond to Melissa's emotion in real time.
